I'm sure you all know Oprah joined Twitter. Shaq....SHAQ of all people had to correct her grammar. When you have your grammar corrected by Shaq, you know it's time to get a decent ghostwriter...but enough Oprah bashing. Twitter has become the star of the microblogging world, though there are several (in my mind, better) options for you to get your 140 character groove on. These alternatives also support a nascent protocol named OMB, which stands for Open Microblogging.
So how does Twitter go about ensuring they retain their position? Enable OMB! Twitter is already the media darling. It's clearly what celebs know and love when it comes to microblogging. Allow users to go to where they will, wherever the internet winds take them. As less users are on the Twitter site, that relieves the strain.
Now, let's face it. Celebrities don't have time to manage a laconi.ca site. So what do they do to remain the top choice? Offer them a no-config needed homebase. Offer always-up service. Charge a small $5 - $10 fee if need be. Celebrities have shown they're more than willing to pay for the dumbest things. At least this way, they help make the twitter service commercially sustainable, and engage their user base directly as well. With OMB, communities can form websites around themselves, but still remain connected to other communities, such as twitter if they enabled OMB. If Twitter enabled OMB, they could connect with the communities in identi.ca, bleeper.de, and more!
